Maintain Your Network

Now that you’ve invested your time in building up a network, you must put some effort into maintaining it – otherwise people will forget about you.

What can you tell people or help them with? Help them out and they’ll owe you a favor in return.

What you do to keep in touch is up to you. For some, Christmas card may be enough. For others, it may an occasional phone call or e-mail. ‘I was reading article about the X industry, and it made me think you. How are you?’

If you change jobs, write personalized notes telling people about your new move. Or ring them you’re passing by and see if they are free for a quick drink.

Consider what is appropriate for each individual that you know – to strike the balance between neglecting people and hassling them too much.

Remember to...
  • Always be ready to talk about yourself and what you do – you can never predict what opportunities might come your way.
  • Concentrate on what you think you can do for other people. Make sure you help other people out before expecting them to help you in return.
  • Keep in touch with your network. Contacts will forget you if you don’t continue to show an interest in them.
